You have to install the Workstation in order to run virtual desktops and custom sessions (floating window/rootless). Once you are authenticated, use the handy wizard link to start a custom session. If you’re using the free NoMachine software, which is to the physical display only, you won’t have the custom session functionality, nor virtual desktop for that matter.
