Hi, I am trying to set up a system whereby my host machine operates in a headless mode, but two or more clients connect to it in such a way that they effectively operate as an extended desktop. It appears that I can do something similar if those displays exist physically, by connecting to a specific display on each one, but I do not want to connect any physical displays to the host machine.

Using nomachine-workstation I can get multiple virtual *desktops*, but each is it’s own x session, meaning I cannot move a window/application from one to the other as an extended desktop.

Does anyone know how I might go about setting this up?

All machines are running u20 or u22 with GNOME, and due to hardware limitations, HDMI dummy plugs are not an option.

Diagram of attached below in case it better explains my ambition.

Right now the only way to have multiple monitors in a virtual desktop session is to connect from a client machine that has multiple monitors. It’s rather a unique use case, but we can evaluate whether to add the possibility to create virtual desktops with an arbitrary number of virtual monitors or not 🙂
