My remote server is running Ubuntu 22.04 and NX free version V8.14.2, my clients are a M2 air laptop macOS Sequoia 15.01 NX 8.14.2 and workstation Ubuntu 24.04 NX8.14.2. Both clients are connected to the same network, though macOS has both a wireless and wired connection. To connect the three machines I use Zerotier assigned IP addresses, the zerotier server IP is pingable with similar latencies on both clients and SSH works through the zerotier IP from both clients. Using X11 on both remote and client, GNOME with standard MESA drivers and AMD GPUs.

    1. Using macOS client to control the server works great. All features work and control is fluid.
    2. Using Ubuntu 24.04 to control the client: Either the screen is dark (can just make out some images present), or some screen drawing problems but in both cases the mouse or keyboard do not seem to control the remote. The window decorations are not visible so the window itself has some problem.

I tried to turn hardware encoding on the Ubuntu client OFF as well as accelerated display, but problems remain. What else can I tweak, or is there some better way to debug what is happening (there are no obvious errors reported)?

We need to clarify better what is the client OS you are using to connect from and what is the server OS host you are connecting to when you encounter this issue. You mentioned that you turned hardware encoding off on the Ubuntu client. HW encoding is turned off on the server. On which Ubuntu machine did you disable HW encoding?

We understand that you are connecting from the macOS or Ubuntu 24.04 (clients) to the Ubuntu 22.04 server? Is this right?

Is it only when you connect from Ubuntu 24.04 to the Ubuntu 22.04 server that you have this problem? If so, you could try disabling hardware decoding on the Ubuntu 24.04 client. To do this follow the instructions here https://kb.nomachine.com/AR07U01202 making sure to set the option key=”Enable hardware accelerated decoding” to value=”disabled”.
