I’m wondering if this issue with Proxmox VMs will ever been fixed.
I’ve used 3 different Proxmox servers since the pandemic; one with a desktop build with an i5-11500T CPU, an HP ProDesk mini PC with an i5-8500T, and a Chinese mini PC with Celeron N5105. But they all have the same issue described below.
I use NoMachine (free) for local remote access to my VMs, which are usually Linux, Debian-based (Peppermint, Linux Mint, Linux Lite, etc). NoMachine incomparably better than Window’s Remote Desktop and VNC. But there is one big issue with NoMachine…
The Issue
There’s about a 75% chance that closing an application (especially a web browser) within the VM that crashes the whole VM itself right into the login screen — within seconds.
Visually through NoMachine, once I close an application, the VM will freeze for maybe 3 seconds, and then I’m suddenly on the OS login screen. All apps I had running are closed, and all background services are restarted — it’s as if I had restarted the VM intentionally, but I didn’t.
This only seems to happen on Linux VMs and not on Windows VMs. Though I do not know if this problem is only on Debian/Ubuntu-based, as I only go with Debian-based OSs (XFCE desktop usually but not always). I don’t run Windows VMs much, but I’ve never encountered this problem on those.
I’m 99% positive this is a NoMachine issue. I’ve run over 20 Linux VMs throughout the years. This crash happens on new VM installs too, not just old ones. Even with just NoMachine as the only app I’ve installed, it still happens. This crash never happens when running NoMachine on a none VM Linux machine.
