    Hello.

Recently I started having an issue with NoMachine. If I reboot the computer, after having made a remote connection (local network), I am unable to log in on the device itself. It just gets stuck in a loop on the login screen, returning me right after confirming my password. If I use ctrl+alt+F3, I can log in fine via the terminal.

I know this is NoMachine related, because it is fixed if I purge NoMachine and reboot. Reinstalling NoMachine, everything works fine until my next reboot.

I think this is related to a setting I changed, where I was asked by a popup if I wanted to allow NoMachine to spoof a fake display. I said yes, and since then this problem has been occurring. Where can I find that setting to disable it?

    Thanks!

PS: I suspect this is the same issue as this unsolved issue from a year ago: https://forums.nomachine.com/topic/login-loop-ubuntu-18-04

The problem seems to be resolved by switching to lightdm and using that instead to login.

The problem is related to Wayland and GDM and it’s a known issue. You can see the Trouble  Report which is in status ‘Open’:

Cannot connect to the physical desktop of Ubuntu 18.04 (Error 108)
    https://www.nomachine.com/TR10P08935

Using LightDM as an alternative is possible or the workaround we included in the TR.

Okay so this seems like a different issue, because:
    1. I have Wayland disabled

    2. The problem is now happening with LightDM as well.

    🙁

Only solution so far is to ctrl+alt+f3, sudo apt purge NoMachine, restart, login, reinstall NoMachine; I have to do this on every reboot.

Please update to the latest version of the software and let us know if this issue is still happening. In that case, open a new topic 🙂

So I can confirm that the issue still happens on the latest version. Unfortunately there is another issue now as well:

The previous behaviour was that when I log in, it gives me remote access to the logged in session (same user). All the settings and desktop is as it should be. Now, when I log in it creates a new session, with all the settings and tweaks for my environment wiped, and replaced by the defaults. The filesystem is fine, I’m still the correct user, but none of my Gnome settings have persisted.

I apologize, but I’m not going to open a new topic. I just can’t use the software. For now I’m using an alternative that is much more stable, even though it requires a workaround to work at all (steam remote play of a text editor lol).

Anyway, thanks for the help. Happy New Year.

Sorry to hear that the problem persisted. We test our software on thousands of machines with thousands of different desktop environments and Linux versions, in their original factory settings, but of course we can’t guarantee that it will work on every computer out-of-the-box with the multitude of custom settings that our Linux users have configured. Next time, send us the logs from the affected computer.

The previous behaviour was that when I log in, it gives me remote access to the logged in session (same user).

And this is still the case. However, I’m not sure what version you are referring to and whether you were using the NoMachine for Linux free version or possible our legacy product NX Free Edition. If you’re interested in running virtual Linux desktop sessions, you should try the Workstation product from our For Enterprise range. Next time, what I strongly suggest is to be sure you removed all residuals of version 3 you had before, if any, and this extends to any NX derivatives you may have been using since these are not from NoMachine. We’ve seen NX installations from products using our open-source software failing to uninstall correctly and interfering every attempt of NoMachine to run on the same computer later.
