On one of our sites NoMachine was working, but then after a Linux password change for the user we use for NoMachine, NoMachine refuses to login. /usr/NX/var/log/nxserver.log shows:

3899 3899 2023-03-02 11:54:44 983.883 NXSERVER ERROR! Authentication with ‘NX-password’ from host ‘127.0.0.1’ failed. Error is ‘Wrong password or login’.

    We have tried:

    • changing the password again
    • re-installing NoMachine

but we continue to get the same error.

Is it possible for the user to start a new connection i.e not using the old session file?

Where do I find the session file? Client or server? Path name?

The session file, or connection file as it is also called, is on the client side, the device you are connecting from. More details about how to locate it are here:

You can check this yourself by opening the NoMachine Player, going to Player -> Settings -> Folders.

Did you try what I suggested and create and connect with a new connection for that user?

I created a new connection and it hence used a new session file. The behaviour is still the same. In the session file I see:

33358 33358 09:46:15 873.445 ClientSession: Failing reason is ‘Authentication failed for user acusensus’.

Yet I can log directly into that computer using the same credentials I used with NoMachine.

Closed. Issue was caused by user’s own security hardening changes for the file /etc/pam.d/su.
