I keep getting the message that a connection timeout has occurred when trying to connect (local, Mac OS 10.15 with NM(free) 7.0.211) to a (I believe) Linux machine at another campus. Here is the error:

    WARNING! Can’t resolve IPv6 host ‘HOST_NAME’.

WARNING! Error is 49, ‘Can’t assign requested address’.

I have also tried both connecting to this computer from my personal computers and accessing my personal computers (Mac OS 11.0 and Windows 7) from this computer and get the same error message. Both of my personal computers are able to connect to the Linux machine in question. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Session log attached.

    Hi ty_yo,

We received your client-side logs, thank you.

Could you please verify that the port 4000 is correct when connecting to smbnxs1.slac.stanford.edu? You might need to ask the server administrator. Thanks!

    Hi Carin,

    Yes, port 4000 is correct.

If you are sure that the server configuration is correct, I’d say something in your network or firewall configuration is dropping your packets by causing a timeout. Try to run the command nc -v <hostname> 4000 and confirm that you receive the message “Connection to … succeeded!”. If you do not, then you should try to debug your firewall or VPN.
