You know notices such as these… (and you see a few variations on this statement on the NoMachine website)
IMPORTANT NOTICE: How NoMachine software handles expired licenses
Starting from version 7, the server will cease to work once the license is expired. This applies to whichever license version installed in software v7 or later.
How accurate is that?
Because it seems that version 6.18.1 will also cease to function once the system clock goes beyond the expiry date/time in the license file.
But with version 6.9.2 it won’t.
So should this statement actually apply to some version 6.x.x releases as well… and at what point did this change?
Also… the way this statement is phrased… it infers that prior to using older licenses on pre-version 7 software… you were entitled to perpetually use the software… obviously on the understanding that since your subscription had ended you couldn’t expect updates or support. Have I got that right?
Just curious!
January 9, 2023 at 13:07 #42366BritgirlKeymasterI’m not sure what the problem is that you have with the software you’ve installed. It seems to me that your license has expired and for this reason you can only install up to a certain version of v6 updates. The same rule applies to v7 updates installed on top of v6 software. i.e it’s not possible to install updates of any release on top of software which has an expired subscription.
For version 6, once your subscription expired, updates were no longer possible and the software continued to run as expired software. So, if you had a subscription, let’s say purchased on December 21st, 2018 and it expired on December 21st, 2019, you would have been able to install updates which were released before your expiry. So, in this particular example, the maintenance of v6 which was 6.9.2 (Dec 17th, 2019) could have been installed. Any maintenance update which we released after the license expiry date of December 21st 2019 could not have been installed, but the software would continue to let you connect.
This model changed in version 7.
Pasting from the article in our KB:
Why renewing your NoMachine Server license is important
https://kb.nomachine.com/AR03D00365Starting from version 7, it is necessary for subscriptions to be renewed in order to continue to use the software, and keep your NoMachine server(s) in a functional state. When your subscription period has expired, the software will stop working and connections will no longer be possible.
This applies to v7 licenses and later, and also v5/v6 licenses activated in v7 software.
January 12, 2023 at 10:59 #42432LantiziaParticipantThis doesn’t answer the difference in behaviour witnessed between 6.18.1 and 6.9.2 as I already mentioned.
January 12, 2023 at 11:23 #42433LantiziaParticipantActually I think I get what you’re saying now… but this should mean 6.14.1 should work as it was the last released version before the expiry (in this particular license file).
If I only had a copy of 6.14.1 to test that theory, but it seems it is gone…
But 6.18.1 is still up…
January 12, 2023 at 15:14 #42441BritgirlKeymasterbehaviour witnessed between 6.18.1 and 6.9.2 as I already mentioned.
It is not clear what behaviour you witnessed which is different. In theory, if your subscription expired just after the release of v6.9.2 you would be able to install 6.9.2 updates but not 6.18.1. If your subscription expired just after the 6.14 release, the same concept applies. You would be able to install 6.14 but not 6.18. However, I don’t know the details of your subscription, so can only give you examples.
If I only had a copy of 6.14.1 to test that theory, but it seems it is gone…But 6.18.1 is still up…
The customer area shows customers the current version available for download. It is not a repository of all releases. So if your subscription is valid for v6, you will see the latest release, which is indeed 6.18.
I suggest that you contact the team via the website if you are having problems with downloading or you think your customer area is showing you the wrong information.
If we know your subscription expiry date, we can tell you what updates you were entitled to access and install, and provide a private link if you did not download them when your subscription was valid. A subscription must be kept valid to maintain access to the support sections of your customer area, namely the updates and technical assistance sections.

Well I have the server.lic and node.lic which includes the actual date… and I also have the ability to login to the customer area still. However the customer area tells me “Support enquiries are not enabled” and so there is no ability to contact anyone through that.
If you mean I can share the information with you via this forum then a) the forum only considers you a ‘participant’ of the forum on your profile, and not connected to NoMachine (so I’d be unsure about sending you such files or dates), b) I see no way to private message you anyway, let alone the ability for you to message a private link back.
Unless I’m missing something?
January 12, 2023 at 18:15 #42454BritgirlKeymasterI am one of the NoMachine team 🙂 but I would not submit information to this topic which is sensitive because this topic is in the public domain. Private messages in the forum are not enabled. Also do not attach your license keys here. For further assistance with this matter please contact us via the website in the footer by going to Contact us -> General enquiries -> Sales or Info (it doesn’t matter) to let us check your subscription details, and provide you with further assistance. Make sure you provide your customer ID .
However the customer area tells me “Support enquiries are not enabled” and so there is no ability to contact anyone through that.
If your subscription has expired you won’t be able to open support enquiries, but you will be able to view your support enquiry history. Please see the following article in our KB for details
