When my laptop goes to sleep, for example when closing the lid, the NoMachine connection drops as expected. When I reopen the lid, the client reports that the connection was broken and requires me to click Retry. After that, I am prompted for a username.

This happens even though the connection profile already specifies the username, authentication is done via SSH key with no password, and opening the same .nxs connection file manually reconnects immediately with no interaction.

What is the recommended way to configure the NoMachine client so that after sleep it automatically reconnects cleanly using the saved connection profile, without requiring Retry or asking for the username?

I am not trying to disable reconnect. I want automatic reconnect, just without user interaction.

Is there a supported player configuration option or documented workaround to achieve this?

In v9, we implemented changes to how the reconnect works. In order to add a further layer of security to the reconnection, we no longer use the user credentials, but connect and authenticate to the server through a security token. This token has a short expiration time, so when the lid is opened and the notebook system restored, the server rejects the automatic reconnection token authentication. So it’s not possible to reconnect without any user interaction. We are going to add a new key to the server which will allow the token expiry to be configured per user needs.

Please take a look at the dedicated article about how reconnection works:
