NoMachine worked on my current environment (nxserver Version 5.1.62 on a RH7 Dell hardware, client Version 5.x.x on OSX 10.13.6 iMac) for quite some time. Yesterday when I tried a new connection, I got a black screen on connection. Then I

    – downloaded the most recent client (version 7.9.2) and tried, got the same black screen. Then I

    – shutdown the NX server, removed ~/.nx/(file and folders with my machine name), and started the server again. — Still get the black screen.

I searched NoMachine user forum, and Googled for similar topics/solutions and didn’t find anything helpful. Not sure what I should try now?

    Thanks in advance!

Hi, you are using an old version of NoMachine software on the server side which is no longer supported. If you search in this forum, black screen on Linux will take you to an article about headless machines (no monitor attached). It would seem that the problem is on the server side. Perhaps you updated the OS recently?

You don’t mention whether your server has the free version installed or if there is a Terminal Server product installed (e.g Workstation). Either way, if possible, please evaluate updating it because there have been numerous improvements since then and any investigation we carry out will only be on the latest version available to users.

I have a similar issue–using 7.9.2 on both the client and the server (I updated from a 7.6.x on the remote side with the same issue).  The problem started when I upgraded my local system to Ubunto 22.04 pre-release.  The resolution for me was to disable hardware acceleration on the local side.  Not idea, but it got it working again.  Hardware is an AMD 6700xt for the GPU, using the open source drivers.

To ebrandsberg2, we will check this out, thanks for the info. It’s very likely a different cause behind the black screen because one is a combination of RH7 with NM5 installed. Yours is Ubuntu (pre-release) with NM7.9 installed.

    Anyway, here’s a reminder of our policies about installing pre-releases 😉 :

Update: Parallel with this, I also tried to bring remote RH7 GNOME to my MacOS via X11, during which I did a few related updates and reboot etc… to put a long story short, at one occasion I came beck to launch NoMachine — the black screen went away and now everything works fine.  It seemed a server side glitch but I cannot tell what was it. (by the way the server is still 5.1.62; although at a point I attempted to re-install a newer version).

Thanks for letting us know. Glad you fixed it because we wouldn’t have been able to investigate further because v5 is no longer supported.
