I use NoMachine on my MacBook Pro 14 (M1 Pro, 2021) to connect to a Linux client. I use 2 separate resolutions on the server machine, with no scaling.

    • 2560×1440 when I’m at home, connected to a 27″ 3840×2160 monitor
    • 1920×1200 when I’m on the go, on the laptop display

When I use 2560×1440 on my monitor at home, I get clear text. However, when I use 1920×1200 on the laptop display, the text appears significantly blurrier. Even with other resolutions matching the aspect ratio of the 27″ display, text still appears blurrier on the 27″ display unless I select 2560×1440 on the server machine.

The only explanation I can think of is that 2560×1440 exactly half of the macOS render resolution for the 27″ display, which is 5120×2880.

I’ve attached a picture from each resolution and display, though I’m not sure if the effect comes across well.

    I’ve replied to the email

I’ve also confirmed the integer multiple theory – setting my display scaling to “looks like 1800×1169” (render resolution 3600×2338) and my NoMachine resolution to 1800×1169 got me crisp text again
