I’m new to NX and am having trouble understanding how the desktop or session choice list is built.

Running a very barebones Gentoo installation that only has i3wm installed.

The only option in the connecting client is always “Create a new custom session”. I’d like to to present users with different predefined floating apps and full window desktop options here, so they don’t have to mess around with the Custom session dialog on their own.

After reading through a million support documents, it seems there’s only some magic autodetection routines for some well known desktop environments like gnome and kde.

Presently it’s not possible to prepare set of predefined sessions on server side.
However you can prepare custom sessions config files and distribute them among your users or
    make them available on web.

Thanks. In the meanwhile I’ve gotten x2go also working quite well and it serves my needs functionally better at this time.

Going with up to date NoMachine for 10+ users is also a questionmark value wise for my current operation model.

I’m sorry you found an alternative for your terminal server solution. I don’t think it’s because NoMachine doesn’t fit your needs.  I think what you are looking for is a free terminal server, not Small Business Server, aimed at organizations, which is the NoMachine product you are referring to.
