Per the advice of the 2022 post #38853 I installed nomachine-workstation_8.8.1_1_x86_64.rpm (on two Linux computers). I can connect OK to a remote computer and get a desktop session, but there is no “Custom session” option for getting floating windows. The “create  a new desktop or custom session” button seen in the docs like https://kb.nomachine.com/DT04O00140#4.2 does not exist in my NoMachine user interface. The only button I see is the “New” button wherein there are no settings for floating windows.  Has the floating window feature been phased out of Workstation?

What is the system and desktop environment?

Is this an installed Workstation out-of-the-box or did you change something (or someone else maybe changed something?) It looks as if custom sessions are disabled. More info about this here: https://kb.nomachine.com/AR07P00989

Can you tell us the output of:

    sudo grep AvailableSessionTypes /usr/NX/etc/server.cfg ?

You could also try this command as well:
    sudo /usr/NX/scripts/setup/nxnode --availablesessionsetup
