    Hi guys

I’m a newbie on Linux and VPS world. And I’m a bit confused to create a virtual desktop.

I created a VPS with Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS.

I followed the instructions to install a Server on this site:

I downloaded NoMachine for Mac, but when I try to access my VPS I got the message:

“The NoMachine service is not available on host <IP for my VPS>”

I tried to access by SSH.

    The NoMachine Version: 4.0.366.

I checked the SSH ports, on /etc/nxserver/node.conf file.

Could someone give me some inputs?

    Thanks a lot

    Hi Ricardo,

Firstly, you should check the following article: which explains why this message “The NoMachine service is not available on host…” appears and what you can do. Seeing that you are using an old version of NX, you could try this article here:

Secondly, it would be better if you used official packages from NoMachine on your server 🙂 To run a virtual desktop you could install the Workstation product. Unfortunately, we aren’t responsible for the FreeNX packages you are using.

    Hi Britgirl,

    Thanks for your help.

    Some doubts:

    1. Is there any NoMachine server free or a limited version? I only find server with 30 day of evaluation.
    2. If I want to “serve” a linux desktop from my VPS server (Ubuntu), what is the better product?

The free NoMachine for Linux does not include the virtual desktop functionality. With the free version you connect to the physical desktop of the remote host. If you want to connect to multiple desktops on the Linux host, you will need any of the terminal server products from the Enterprise range.
