Using Windows 7 pro to connect to a headless ubuntu 14.04, running Unity.

Both machines use NoMachine free 4.4.6, the 64bit versions.

After installation, I managed to connect once successfully. After that, further attempts result in the “no available sessions on this server” message.

Following your instructions from https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00710, after setting up the virtual display via ssh i get such messages such as:
    http://pastebin.com/BDp6XXVe

After that, running gnome-session , I get the following errors:

error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.
    (gnome-session-check-accelerated:1779): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.
    (gnome-session-check-accelerated:1789): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
** (process:1774): WARNING **: software acceleration check failed: Child process exited with code 1
error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.

    ** (gnome-session:1774): WARNING **: Cannot open display:

While running unity with sudo lightdm &, I get

    /etc/modprobe.d is not a file
    /etc/modprobe.d is not a file
    /etc/modprobe.d is not a file
    /etc/modprobe.d is not a file
update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for x86_64-linux-gnu_gfxcore_conf

I have attached the debug logs.

    Thanks.

Please assure that before starting gnome-session a correct DISPLAY environment variable is set.
Step 6: Run the desktop environment
    $ DISPLAY=:0 nohup /etc/X11/Xsession gnome-session &
