NoMachine becomes slow on Ubuntu 20.04

I’m using NoMachine to connect from my Windows desktop to my Linux (Ubuntu 20.04) development host. I have 7.10.2 on my Windows box and 7.10.1 on my Linux box.

After I reboot, it seems fine for maybe 30 minutes and then it gets dreadfully slow. A friend told me to toggle the display setting (full screen and back) and that works for him – but not for me.

Anyone else having this issue on 7.10?

Also, I would really like to revert back to older versions – like 7.8.2 – but I can’t find those downloads anywhere.

So any help is appreciated.

As far as we know there is no change, between the 7.8 and the 7.10 that could cause this slow down, and even more so this slow down after roughly half an hour.

But in this case it’s not just the NoMachine session that would slow down, but even the physical display.

Did you check whether the physical display slows down?

I turned of my screensaver on my Ubuntu (my nomachine server) box and set my sleep mode timer to 1 hour on my Windows box (my nomachine client). That seems to have remedied this problem.

Thanks for the update. Although having done two tweaks together, it’s not clear which one helped.

However, further investigation on our side shows that this behaviour is reproduced on Ubuntu 20.04 and it’s reproducible even without NoMachine being involved, also by other users on other forums. This seems to show that, whether it’s a bug or the intended behaviour, the video card works in “slowed down mode” when the screensaver is activated, or it goes into sleep status. It’s not caused by NoMachine.

Britgirl – thanks for the update. That is consistent with what I am seeing. It would be nice if the video card would work in “speeded up mode” when you exit the screensaver 🙂

Anyway – its an Ubuntu issue. But it looks like turning off the screensaver is the necessary workaround.

Just one more note on this. My friend also found that doing the following got rid of the slow down on his Ubuntu machine:

FYI – I found a “Power Manager” setting on my remote Ubuntu 20.04 PC that was causing the problem!

Xfce Power Manager -> Display Power management (disable button) and all is well.

I had turned off screen save stuff before, but that is in a completely different settings widget and never noticed that the power manager settings had something for the display
