The NoMachine server on Ubuntu22.04 is not using the Nividia GPU for encoding/acceleration … the slowness renders NoMachine unusable. I need help to troubleshooting/fixing

    Details:

We are migrating to new machines (Dell Precision 5570 – RTX8000) and in our testing we are experiencing NoMachine unusable slowness.

After significant troubleshooting, we identified a discrepancy between running ‘nvida-smi’ on a pre-migration box vs a new box.

The ‘/usr/NX/bin/nxnode.bin’ appears as a nvida-smi process on the pre-migration but not the new.

We assume this confirms that NoMachine is not using the GPU on the new box.

    HOST

    Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
    Gnome 42.5
    NoMachine Enterprise Desktop 8.4.2
Nvidia driver 470 (and tried 425 too)

    CLIENT

    Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS
    Gnome 42.5
    NoMachine Enterprise Client 8.4.2

    Please help.

GPUs must be NVENC-enabled. What specific model is it?

To check what’s being used in your session, you can open the NoMachine connection menu (Ctrl-Alt-0) and go to Display -> Settings. You can also look in the C-*/session logs.

If the model is nvenc-enabled and the drivers are proprietary (if they are nouveau, please switch to proprietary ones), then we’ll need to see the logs. Follow the instructions in this document, making sure to enable player and server side logs as per the instructions before reproducing the problem. You can send everything to forum[at]nomachine[dot]com. Please use the title of this topic as the subject of your email. Thanks.
