I’m currently testing different versions of NoMachine, and got stuck at the same issue as this thread https://forums.nomachine.com/topic/installer-fails-on-windows-10
I first installed ‘nomachine-enterprise-desktop_6.12.3_7.exe’ which was working. Then uninstalled, didn’t restart the computer, and tried installing nomachine_6.12.3_7.exe. I now get the runtime error all the time, regardless of installs and restarts.
The last lines from my Setup log:

October 7, 2020 at 17:28 #29839zaqParticipantHello wlgrd,
Could you:
1) Open cmd as Administrator – open Menu Start and just write cmd, then choose ‘Run as administrator’.
2) Run this commands:
dir "C:\Program Files (x86)\NoMachine\etc"
icacls "C:\Program Files (x86)\NoMachine\etc\nodes.db"
3) Send the whole log file and outputs from the commands to forum[at]nomachine[dot]com please?
October 8, 2020 at 08:23 #29842wlgrdParticipantNo reason to set/read permissions on a file that doesn’t exist.
I worked around it by creating an empty file nodes.db during installation so it would find the file at the end of the install. Now it works perfectly again.
Will send you the log file when back at said computer again for brevity’s sake. Maybe you can find the root cause for it.
October 16, 2020 at 16:31 #29967BritgirlKeymasterSend them to forum[at]nomachine[dot]com. They might be useful 🙂
