    Hi Community,

It seems I need to update the NoMachine version to renew a license, yet it requires a renewed license to update.

Is there a safe way to manually force update NoMachine installation without a valid license?
I concerning about compatibilities issues if I reinstall without purging the old installation, or user settings loss if I clean reinstall.

Or do I need to purchase a v7 and a v8 license just to update them?

    For context:

I encountered a problem that when I tried to update two machines (with v7 and v8) with new license that I newly purchased, and I believe is for v9

I extracted the keys.tar.gz emailed to me to ~/keys on both machines

    admin@machine1:~$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --version
NX> 630 ERROR: The subscription license on this server has expired.
NX> 630 ERROR: Please contact NoMachine to acquire a valid license.
NoMachine Workstation Subscription - Version 7.6.2
    <blockquote>admin@machine2:~$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --version
NX> 630 ERROR: The subscription on this server has expired.
NX> 630 ERROR: Please contact NoMachine to acquire a valid subscription.
NoMachine Workstation Subscription - Version 8.11.3

    They both errored with –activate:

    admin@machine1:~$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --activate /home/admin/keys/server-01.lic
NX> 500 ERROR: license type WSS is not valid.
    admin@machine2:~$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --activate /home/admin/keys/server-01.lic
NX> 500 ERROR: license type WSS is not valid.
    Also failed with --subscriptionset:
    admin@machine1:~$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --subscriptionset /home/admin/keys/server-01.lic
NX> 630 ERROR: The subscription license on this server has expired.
NX> 630 ERROR: Please contact NoMachine to acquire a valid license.
    admin@machine2:~$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --subscriptionset /home/admin/keys/server-01.lic
    Segmentation fault

I suspect I need to update first for them to recognize v9 license.
but they both refuse to update due to expired license.
    admin@machine1:/usr$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --stop

NX> 630 ERROR: The subscription license on this server has expired.
NX> 630 ERROR: Please contact NoMachine to acquire a valid license.

    admin@machine1:/usr$ sudo /usr/NX/nxserver --update

Your NoMachine subscription is expired, updating the software is no longer permitted.
Please contact your NoMachine provider or the Support Team for renewal options.
    admin@machine2:/usr$ sudo /etc/NX/nxserver --stop

NX> 630 ERROR: The subscription license on this server has expired.
NX> 630 ERROR: Please contact NoMachine to acquire a valid license.

    admin@machine2:/usr$ sudo /usr/NX/nxserver --update

Hi, when a license has expired it is no longer possible to update the software. Installing a new/renewed license will generally allow you to update the software. However, updating to NoMachine 9 from v8 is an exception to this rule. Due to some major changes in how the licenses work (see https://kb.nomachine.com/AR10U01206) V9 licenses are not compatible with v8 nor v7. You would need to update the software first to v9, then install the new license.

Given that your previous license has expired, what you can do is contact sales. They will be happy to provide you with a temporary license to allow you to update to the latest version, into which you can then install your recently purchased v9 licenses. Don’t forget that if you have already renewed your subscription, you have direct access to the Support Team. Please login with the registered email address of your NoMachine account and proceed to the User Area > Support Enquiries section.
