Virtual Desktop support for 3D hardware acceleration

Hi everyone,

I’m looking into the ‘nomachine-terminal-server package’ for running 3d applications on a headless system with NVIDIA 3D hardware acceleration. Unfortunately I hit a road block, it seems if there is no Xorg running (because it’s a headless system)  NoMachine does not make use of the xorg.conf file, in particular the virtual desktop function. If I connect a screen, Xorg comes up and I’m able to share the physical screen, but that’s not what I want. Is there a way to get NVIDIA 3D acceleration running using a virtual desktop? I already tried the VirtualGL feature ( https://www.nomachine.com/es/AR05P00982 ), but unfortunately the application seems no the recognize the proper 3d context.

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

Hello.

VirtualGL needs a a running 3D X server in order to share the GPU with applications running in virtual desktops.

I knew development is ongoing on VirtualGL to make it work on NVIDIA cards directly and remove the need for a running X server.

Thx for sharing those information. I already figured that a running X server would be required to access 3D acceleration. Please correct me if I’m wrong, so if I do bring up an Xorg, it would be possible to create multiple virtual desktops which would utilize a single graphic card in parallel?

Are you at liberty to shed any light on the timeline regarding that on going development?

Yes, multiple virtual sessions can share the GPU through a single Xorg server.

About current state of VirtualGL, I’d suggest to keep an eye on VirtualGL users mailing list.
