I ended up getting it working again

sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver --uninstall
sudo dpkg -r nomachine
sudo dpkg --purge nomachine
sudo rm -rf /usr/NX /etc/NX /var/NX ~/.nx
sudo reboot

reinstalled the deb and I can share the desktop again

its stuff I probably should have tried sooner but I’m very inexperienced with Linux. I did do the first two before I think, but not the rest.
