NoMachine (the free version) lets you access the physical desktop remotely and requires that the Xserver is running. You can also use NoMachine on a headless Linux server (without the need of having the X server running), more instructions are available here:

Any of the products from the Terminal Server range (e.g. Workstation or Terminal Server, https://www.nomachine.com/enterprise), allows to create virtual desktop sessions. In this case itโs not necessary to have the Xserver running.
The free 3, NX Free Edition, worked as a terminal server limited to 2 users. This functionality is no longer available in the free version.
BritgirlKeymasterPath 4,
You might not need USB support, but there are rather a lot of other customers who do which is why it’s a functionality of the software. If you don’t want the USB feature, you can just disable it.
When we were deciding what to offer in the free version, we decided to keep the same level of functionality as the Enterprise products. This is the first time that I’ve heard from a user of the free version that they would like it to do less ๐

BritgirlKeymasterThere’s no need to remove anything. The problem is the USB drivers which must be disabled. This article explains how to do that: https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00733. As it says, NoMachine is investigating the cause and a solution will be made available very soon.
BritgirlKeymasterPrevious versions would log me in automatically.
Did you request the client to save the password in the session file?
In the old version I could specify that I wanted Gnome to start in the client application.
You can do that in the 4 too. Configuration now happens once you have connected to the server, not before connecting, so that the player can query the server and check what is supported. You tell what desktop environment you want to start at the time you create a new desktop. It seems you are using the free version, thus you are connecting to the existing desktop and so you get whatever is running there already. To be able to create new virtual desktops you need to install NoMachine Workstation.
