What you probably need is the Workstation for Linux. It’s in the Terminal Server range: https://www.nomachine.com/product&p=NoMachine%20Workstation
This will allow you to run your own personal Linux desktop and won’t be visible to others (on the monitor). NoMachine (free) is for connecting to the physical display. With version 5 which is being finalized as I write this it will be possible to blank the screen so passers-by don’t see what’s happening if there is a monitor attached. This might be an option to you if the Workstation isn’t.
BritgirlKeymastercan I ask whether NoMachine should add an “Other…” option to Yosemite’s login page?
We’re checking this on the latest version of NoMachine 5.
BritgirlKeymasterHere it is: https://www.nomachine.com/FR09M02968
BritgirlKeymasterThis is really a question specific to your environment and is better dealt with via our traditional support channels since there is sensitive data being asked for. This will be closed.
BritgirlKeymasterYou can compare the Workstation and free NoMachine package for yourself 😉 https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00702
It totally depends on what you want to do. Access to the physical desktop? Or access to a virtual Linux desktop and run up to 4 of these virtual instances? Do you need SSH built in? These are all choices you have to make. Subscriptions control the server software, clients don’t require subscriptions, so choose between NoMachine (server and client together) or the Enterprise Client.
BritgirlKeymasterRead our article on encryption: https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00705
Encryption in the NX protocol is implemented using OpenSSL TLS/SSL. Since version 4.1 it uses ‘ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256’ as default cipher suite. ‘ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256’ is an AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) block cipher with 128 bits key in GCM (Galois/Counter Mode). RC4 is used as backward compatibility when connecting from or to version 4.0.”
Btw, you can still tunnel NX over an SSH connection using the free version. You will need to set up SSH appropriately first on the client and server, then connect as per our instructions here: https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00728
BritgirlKeymasterThanks for taking the time to report your findings. We’ll be taking a closer look to see what’s going on.
BritgirlKeymasterCan you tell us what the OS and version is on the client side, also on the server side we need to know the distribution and version.
BritgirlKeymasterNo. Input buffering is not configurable. Events are transmitted as soon as it’s possible.
BritgirlKeymasterSorry for not being clear. I have just edited my post to clarify what you can do. There was some confusion between your two posts (which were asking the same question, but worded differently).
The Workstation evaluation is for 30 days. Please try the free product and see if this satisfies your requirements for desktop sharing.
If you were to decide to opt for the Workstation, any updates we release (including majors) are available as part of your annual subscription.
BritgirlKeymasterDesktop sharing is possible with all our products. NoMachine (free to download) will let you connect to another user’s computer and see what is happening on the desktop. You need NoMachine installed both sides.
If you don’t want to connect to the physical desktop, you could consider using Workstation which will run a virtual desktop ‘behind’ the physical desktop of the remote host. Where you have a Workstation installed, it is possible to share any of the virtual desktops running.
See the following articles for more details: https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00702 and https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00700
Our next release, NoMachine 5, which is going to be released very soon, will offer screen blanking. This is useful for unattended machines or when administrators don’t wish to show the operations being performed on the screen. It’s a setting which is configurable by the owner of the desktop: https://www.nomachine.com/FR09I02610
BritgirlKeymasterA quick overview of what’s coming up 🙂 Screen blanking, internationalization of GUI, native GUI (set either native or the traditional ‘dark’), resolution slider in the Display settings to let you dynamically change the resolution to your specific requirements, enhanced performance (we’ve added support for Nvidia’s Maxwell architecuture (see the recent videos on our FB page for examples), improved multi-monitor support, out-of-the-box support for Linux headless servers, oh and a few more things for the enterprise-oriented range such as Kerberos ticket-based authentication and enhanced remote node management.
BritgirlKeymasterWe opened a Trouble Report for this particular bug https://www.nomachine.com/TR09M06021. Please sign up to the ‘notify me’ tool to know when it has been fixed.
BritgirlKeymasterNext week 😉 Have you signed up to our mailing list? https://www.nomachine.com/mailing-lists
BritgirlKeymasterWhat version of NoMachine are you using (both sides)? Can you send us the logs? https://www.nomachine.com/AR10K00697
Send to forum[at]nomachine[dot]com making sure you reference the topic. Thanks!
